CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Republicans in the 1st Legislative District called for immigration reforms Tuesday in the wake of the triple slaying in Newark.The execution-style shootings of four college students Aug. 4 – allegedly by a gang that included an undocumented Peruvian – was shocking even for one of New Jersey’s most crime-plagued cities. One victim survived after being shot in the head.Sen. Nicholas Asselta, R-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, and his Republican running mate, Assembly candidate Michael Donohue, said the tragedy illustrates the pressing need to stiffen immigration enforcement.The Peruvian suspect, Jose Carranza, was free on bail at the time of the shooting, awaiting trial on charges of assault and child rape.

NEWTON — Luz Quintero was one of nine children in Cartago, Valle, Colombia, and the family funds ran dry in the middle of her college studies.

Her grandfather, Roberto, gave up his life savings so she could find a better life abroad.

Just 21 years old, she boarded planes to Mexico and then Newark to live with her cousin in Madison. It was September 1985, she did not know English and the not-so-equatorial winter was ahead.

NJIPN Supports Training and Calls for Reevaluation of Attorney General’s Directive

NEWARK On August 22, the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey issued Directive 2007-3. When the directive was released, it did not include any specific training requirements. The New Jersey Immigration Policy Network cautioned at that time that the directive could lead to racial profiling and other forms of police abuse. Specifically, the New Jersey Immigration Policy Network urged the Attorney General to conduct extensive training for all police departments. Furthermore, the New Jersey Immigration Policy Network has indicated, since release of the directive in August, that the directive was deficient, confusing, and problematic.

Group Calls For Immigration Reform

NORTH PASSAIC — A leading immigrants rights group in New Jersey is launching a campaign calling on federal lawmakers to reform immigration laws, and also urging state officials to draft policies addressing aspects of illegal immigration.The New Jersey Immigration Policy Network said Monday it will place Internet and print ads that cast immigrants as a foundation of the United States, and urge residents to pressure members of the U.S. Senate who NJIPN says are obstructing efforts to revamp immigration laws. NJIPN made its announcement as the Senate prepares to renew debate on an immigration reform measure that would strengthen enforcement along the U.S.-Mexican border, while giving millions of illegal immigrants a way to legalize their status.
