GANNETT STATE BUREAU
TRENTON — New Jersey's attorney general told the state's police officers Wednesday to alert federal authorities when a suspected illegal immigrant is arrested for an indictable crime or drunk driving. More than one in six people living in New Jersey were born outside the United States, and there are an estimated 380,000 people living here without proper documents. By New Jersey Immigration Policy Network
NEWARK — On August 22, the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey issued Directive 2007-3. When the directive was released, it did not include any specific training requirements. The New Jersey Immigration Policy Network cautioned at that time that the directive could lead to racial profiling and other forms of police abuse. Specifically, the New Jersey Immigration Policy Network urged the Attorney General to conduct extensive training for all police departments. Furthermore, the New Jersey Immigration Policy Network has indicated, since release of the directive in August, that the directive was deficient, confusing, and problematic.

NEWTON — Luz Quintero was one of nine children in Cartago, Valle, Colombia, and the family funds ran dry in the middle of her college studies.
Her grandfather, Roberto, gave up his life savings so she could find a better life abroad.
Just 21 years old, she boarded planes to Mexico and then Newark to live with her cousin in Madison. It was September 1985, she did not know English and the not-so-equatorial winter was ahead.
